Fundamental elements of the school’s
approach to teaching and learning, community-centered
education and project-based learning, occupy places of
central importance at Blackstone Academy.
The school’s signature “Community Improvement
Projects” or CIPs provide opportunities for students
to apply learned skills to improving their local community
in strategic ways through a learning model that offers
groups of students to partnering community organizations
as consultants who can design and produce authentic products
and services that are useful contributions as the partners
pursue their missions in Pawtucket and Central Falls.

CIPs
incorporate the following criteria in their design:
• The project involves a student group working
in the role of planners.
• The project has a product that is the focus
of the group’s effort, reflection, and evaluation.
• The project applies learning from at least two
academic disciplines.
• The project is nurtured and resourced by a faculty
sponsor to drive it over the long term.
